Mid-summer Changes

Greetings from Eastern Samar! All three riverboat teams and the construction team working in Leyte just enjoyed a few days together on vacation. I am thankful that God in his goodness prescribes rest for us because we need it!

A change has been made that we would like to ask you to join us in prayer over. We started out this summer with an all girls team, an all guys team, and a mixed team. In the last week it was impressed upon many of us, including our field supervisors, that it would be wise to mix up the all guys' and all girls' teams to make three co-ed teams, for several reasons. Having guys present versus having only girls changes how people perceive and sometimes treat our teams. Also, sometimes the girls can reach people that guys can't (a woman home alone with her baby may be wary of being approached by American guys), and vice-versa. During our mid-summer break we all gathered together to pray about and discuss this change at length. It's a difficult thing, to be sure, as relationships have already solidified and team dynamics and routines have been set. I won't say there weren't any tears shed because there were, but in the end everyone wants James 3:17 kind of wisdom and what will best advance the Kingdom.

We met together to corporately humble ourselves before the Lord and ask Him to direct our paths. We reminded ourselves and each other that He is Sovereign, and none of this took Him by surprise; He knew all along, in fact He willed, that mid-summer the teams would be rearranged. The decision reached was unanimous and was not sought after lightly. Please pray for the new Ulot and Oras river teams as they adjust to this change. In some ways it will be a little bit like starting over for them but we trust God's hand to continue using all things to conform us more into the image of Jesus.

  • Pray for grace to abound in their midst.
  • Pray that they would love each other deeply and make allowance for each other's faults and quirks.
  • Pray that they would die to self daily and serve one another with joy.
  • Pray that in our love for each other our Father in Heaven would manifest Himself and be greatly glorified.
